Château Poujeaux - Moulis en Médoc - 2014

Delicious red berries on the nose and palate, with hints of spice and vanilla from the oak, all rounded off by smooth tannins and a savoury minerality. This is pretty irresistible now but has the structure and balance to improve still further over the next couple of years. Proper Bordeaux for an almost unbelievably good price.

Château Poujeaux is a cru Bourgeois property in the lesser-known commune of Moulis, who create wines that are very consistent year on year and of a Grand Cru Classé quality. They have a very colourful history dating back many centuries with owners ranging from Gaston de L'Isle, a 16th Century owner of Ch Latour, to Marquis François Etienne de Brassier, owner of Ch Beychevelle.

Arguably the real success of the estate began in 2008 when the Cuvelier family, of Clos Fourtet fame, purchased the Château. The winery, farming techniques and all facilities were modernised, under the keen eye of the young and forward-thinking Mathieu Cuvelier. Yields were reduced and traditional farming exchanged for organic management. Here at Genesis we stock the Haut de Poujeaux, the estate's second wine. The wine is made from grapes just outside the property, hence the Haut-Médoc designation. It's a fantastic wine for the money and definitely one of those rare gems that reminds you that one can still find value in Bordeaux.
